As fur parents, we treat our pets like our own children because we love them and they are completely dependent on us.
They rely on us when it comes to food, exercise, and grooming, especially pets who have extra needs such as senior, disabled, aggressive, and young pets.
However, there will come a time when we’ll plan to go on a vacation, be on a business trip, or attend to an emergency situation. We can’t just leave our pets behind unattended, so finding a pet-sitter is important if none of our friends or family are up for the task.
Here are some guidelines in choosing the best pet sitter:
1. People can vouch for them
The first thing you should consider is how you came to know this person. It is easier to trust a sitter that was referred by a friend or if this sitter is someone whom you have known personally for quite some time.
If this is not the case, you can follow or add this person’s social media account to check for his/her background.
Ideally, you should read commendations from their previous clients, and cross your fingers that this pet sitter has no bad record.
2. They are animal lovers
One of the most important signs of an excellent pet sitter is genuine love for animals.
They should not discriminate against other breeds or species, and it is a plus if they have done some volunteer work in animal shelters.
An ideal pet sitter is someone who is not just after the money, but someone who absolutely loves what he or she is doing.
3. They have a good background in pet sitting
A good background does not only mean experiences and commendations. It is also necessary that they have the knowledge in handling and caring for your pet.
Ask them if they know about the basic first aids, if they know how to do a pet CPR, if they are aware of the common red flags in your pet’s species and breed, and assess them if they have the presence of mind to act upon unexpected situations.
You never know what could happen while you’re gone, and their expertise can mean the difference between life and death for your pet.
4. They can easily be reached anytime
Even while you’re away and even if your pet is in good hands, you still need to check on them from time to time.
Choose a pet sitter who is easy to reach regardless of time zone differences.
This is also a must if your pet has special needs and you’d like to be assured that they have taken their medicine, or if the pet sitter is following special instructions you might have for your pet.
5. They offer a good environment for your pet
A pet sitter should be able to accommodate your pet in an environment that is suitable for them.
For example, cats should be placed in escape-proof houses that will let them roam around freely without a chance to escape.
Dogs should also be allowed to roam freely inside the house and an escape-proof yard.
If you must hire a pet sitter, make sure that he or she is completely reliable and trustworthy by checking if they possess the qualities mentioned above. A lot can change in a span of a few days.
Your pet will either enjoy its stay with a pet sitter while patiently waiting for your return, or it will be exposed to an unpleasant environment and come back to you stressed and ill.
If your pet sitter meets all five qualities, you will surely get what you paid for and more.
