A post on social media claimed Humboldt dog pound officers bludgeoned to death a dog in their care using a shovel. It said one officer held the shovel while the other restrained the pup using a dog catcher pole.
One witness, identified as Kevin in the text, said the dog yelped until its last breath. Other witnesses of the horrifying incident said the employees stopped harming other dogs when they realized their actions were being recorded.
The post captured the attention of animal lovers, Humboldt’s Police Department, the Mayor, and an animal rights group.
Humboldt Police Chief Reynard Buchanan confirmed that an investigation is underway to verify the claims. Animal Victory started a petition requiring 15,000 signatures. The group will present the petition to the District Attorney when police find eyewitness statements to be true.
Police arrested the two city employees on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty. They could face up to two years in jail for the Class E felony.
