The latest movie from Marvels’ cinematic universe has everybody talking about an unusual character—Goose the cat, which in reality was played by four felines.
Thrillist ran an interview with Ursula Brauner, an animal trainer who trains animals to act in movies and who was responsible for training the cats playing Goose.
Ursula’s interview starts by busting the common myth that cats can’t be trained.
“I always tell people that cats are just as smart and eager to learn and all those things that dogs are. It’s really just a different psychology,”
Of course, not all cats are alike and not all of them are suitable for participating in movies, so Ursula says that when she selects felines for training she looks for “extroverts”.
As of the four cats playing Goose—Reggie, Archie, Rizzo, and Gonzo—they were all rescued from shelters, with the first two being veteran actors, while Rizzo and Gonzo were trained specifically for Captain Marvel.
Cats are by far not the only animals that have appeared as actors in movies.
Some of the most recognizable snouts are those of the Rough Collie Lassie in the TV production of the same name, Sam the Orangutan in Dustin Checks In, and the seven roaring lions that have been used in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s famous logo.
